ABSS Settles Federal Lawsuit
During a special meeting Monday, the Alamance Burlington School board settled a three-year-old federal lawsuit, approving a $100,000 settlement with a former Sylvan Elementary School teacher. Theresa Schmitz had sued the school system in 2018, saying the school system violated her rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act. She said she was forced to resign from her teacher position after she tried to get time off to care for her disabled son and after she complained to ABSS human resources about her principal. The settlement grants Schmitz $100,000 while releasing ABSS from any liability.
