Alamance Students to Benefit from Largest Gift in Elon University History
The School of Education at Elon University has a new name thanks to the largest endowment gift in the university’s history. The Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education received its name as an honor to Dr. Williams, who has been a supporter of the university for more than 75 years. The 92-year-old Williams lives close to campus and remains connected to the daily life of the university. The Board of Trustees voted to make the name change after receiving a $10 million gift from members of the Williams family. Dr. Williams served a variety of faculty and administrative roles at Elon, including as head of Elon’s first development office beginning in 1979. The $10 million endowment will help fund a variety of programs within the school of education, including the Williams Scholars Program, which will provide scholarships to students from Alamance County who plan to pursue careers in education.
