Athletic Participation was Source of Most NC High School COVID transmissions
Researchers from Duke and UNC Chapel Hill examined the COVID-19 cases of 13 school districts in our state last academic year. They found that 75 percent of the school-acquired infections among high school students and staff were transmitted during school-sponsored athletic events. The majority of those sports-related transmissions occurred via basketball. They found that while a mask mandate was in place for athletic participation, that such rules were inconsistently followed and enforced on the athletic fields and courts. They have submitted their findings for publication in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Those findings suggest additional vigilance in enforcing masking during team sports activities, the need for additional vaccinations, and the need for early detection of the virus through regular testing.
