Burlington PD Officers Receive Mental Health Training
Across the U.S., police officers say about one in seven calls involves a person with a mental health issue. All Burlington Police officers recently completed training to help them be better prepared for when they face someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis. The eight-hour course taught officers how to assess for suicide and self-harm, how to listen without judgment, and how to best give reassurance and encouragement. Such techniques can often help defuse a situation and buy time to allow crisis counselors to arrive and do a more thorough assessment. Locally, officers work with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare and RHA Health Services to provide long-term care as needed.
