Cone Health, Sentara Call Off Anticipated Merger
Cone Health officials will have to return to the drawing board regarding the future of several of its key leaders. That’s because Cone and Virginia-based Sentara Healthcare have officially called off their planned merger. When the proposed merger was announced last year, Cone CEO Terry Akin had announced that he planned to retire when the merger was complete, and Mary Jo Cagle, Cone’s chief operating officer, was scheduled to become president of the Cone Health division of Sentara Healthcare. Now Cone leaders will have to revisit those leadership plans. Cone Health manages five area hospitals, including Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.
