Dr. Kernodle Inducted into NC Sports Hall of Fame
Dr. Charles Kernodle Jr. was posthumously inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Friday night in Raleigh. Kernodle served as the team doctor for the Williams High School football team for 70 years and also provided care for Elon University’s football and basketball teams. He is just the second doctor to be inducted into the hall, and the first – Dr. Lenox Baker – was actually a mentor to Kernodle at Duke University Hospital. He was one of 11 inductees honored Friday. Others included Mack Brown – current coach of the UNC football team; Julius Peppers – a UNC football and basketball star who went on to play 17 seasons in the NFL; and Trot Nixon – a New Hanover High School star who played 12 years for the Boston Red Sox.
