Earthquake Surprises Winston-Salem Residents Sunday

The United States Geological Survey confirmed that a 2.4 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Winston-Salem at around 8:58 Sunday morning. People living in the Southern part of the city reported that they could feel their homes shake, and the USGS identified the epicenter between Old Salisbury Road and Peters Creek Parkway. The quake came just a few hours after a 2.5 magnitude earthquake in Virginia. That quake came about 6:04 a.m. just a few miles from Abingdon, Virginia. North Carolina has experienced its share of earthquakes over the years, but large, damaging seismic events are infrequent in our state.
