Green Level Plans Juneteenth Celebrations This Weekend
In case you were not aware, this Saturday is June 19th, also known as Juneteenth. The significance is the story that former slaves in Texas did not know they had been freed until June 19th 1865, when Union soldiers gave them the news. President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation, that specified all slaves in states of the Confederacy were free. Over the years, it has taken on significance for descendants of slaves. In recent years, more and more places have decided to hold ceremonies and celebrations for Juneteenth. This year, folks in Green Level will be joining in. Green Level officials say the festivities will start at around 5 o’clock at the municipal park on Swann Rd. Green Level City Administrator Barret Brown says they bought all the fireworks and such last year, but could not hold the festival.
