I-40 in Orange County to be Widened
An 11-mile stretch of Interstate 40 through Orange County will soon be widened from four lanes to six lanes, thanks to approval from the North Carolina Government Commission. The commission approved some $300 million in bonds in anticipation of receiving future federal money to cover the projects. Of the bond projects, $55 million is dedicated to widen I-40 from Highway 15-501 to the connection with Interstate 85. The project will eliminate the current lane drop near 15-501 in Durham County. An exact timeline for the project has not yet been released; however, construction could begin this fall.
