Mask Mandates for Schools Remain Undecided for Fall Classes

While many public places have relaxed the use of face coverings in recent weeks, the state Senate continues to debate whether masks will be mandated statewide for our schools this fall. On Wednesday, Senate Bill 173 was sent to a concurrence committee in an effort to gain more input from parents and other constituents. The bill – which has been called the “Free the Smiles Act” -- would put the mask decision in the hands of local school boards, giving the school boards (quote) “the executive authority to determine the use of face coverings and any appropriate exceptions ... during the instructional day on campus.” The Senate will need to vote on the bill soon to allow local school boards time to make a decision about masks before classes start in August.
