NC Legislators Examining Proposed New High School Athletic Commission
Some are calling it a government take over of high school athletics. This morning, the North Carolina Senate Finance Committee is scheduled to discuss House Bill 91 – a bill that would create a new era of oversight for public-school-sponsored sports and would essentially do away the schools’ current relationship with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. The bill would also create a new athletic commission – a 17-member group that would be chosen by the governor, the House speaker and the Senate pro tem for four-year terms. House Bill 91 still has several hurdles to overcome before it can become law. Whether it passes or not, the serious discussion of a new athletic commission could lead to some changes in the current high school athletic association.
