New Law Makes Catalytic Converter Theft a Felony
Last week, Governor Roy Cooper signed Senate Bill 99 – a bill that makes the theft of a catalytic converter a Class I felony and imposes a mandatory $1,000 fine. The bill goes into effect on December 1st. Police in Salisbury have examined recent catalytic converter crimes and have determined the vehicle types that have been most often targeted. Those targeted vehicles include Toyota Priuses, Honda Odyssey vans, SUVs, pick-up trucks, and large box trucks. Police say the owners of these vehicles should park in well-lit areas or near cameras if possible. They also said anti-theft devices can be installed to make catalytic converter theft more difficult.
