Protestors From Alamance County Attracted UNC Police Attention

Two men have made national news for threatening to vandalize a memorial for enslaved and free African Americans on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. At least one of the men – identified as Thomas May – is from Alamance County. The incident took place Saturday and has since been covered by national media outlets, including Newsweek. May and another man sat on the Unsung Founders Memorial, waved confederate flags and talked about their desire to own slaves. UNC Police were alerted to the presence of the protestors. Four officers responded and observed the two individuals for about an hour, waiting for them to leave. A university statement about the incident stated: “As UNC Chapel Hill is a public university and state agency, we must allow demonstrations and free speech.”
