Scott Granted New Trial in 2013 Deadly Elon Wreck
Forty-four year-old William Lee Scott has been granted a new trial by the state supreme court. Scott was convicted in a 2018 trial for the 2013 death of 63-year-old Veocia Collins Warren. Warren was killed when her vehicle was struck by a Jeep driven by Scott near the intersection of University Drive and Manning Drive in Elon. A witness said Scott was driving fast and recklessly just prior to the crash. Data retrieved from the computer system in Scott’s Jeep showed that he was traveling at 78 miles per hour just five seconds before the crash. The state supreme court granted the new trial because jurors in the first trial were told of Scott’s blood alcohol level despite the fact that the DWI evidence was not to be admissible in court.
